XOMA pioneered early methods for the bacterial secretion of antibody domains and has built a body of intellectual property around this work. The production of antibodies, antibody fragments, and other proteins in bacteria using a secretion pathway and the practice of antibody phage display both employ XOMA's microbial secretion of antibodies and antibody fragment technology.

Manufacturing Applications

XOMA’s Bacterial Cell Expression System (PDF) provides efficient, high-level expression of recombinant proteins in E. coli. Components include an expression vector containing the araB promoter, a companion plasmid containing the pelB secretion sequence, and a proprietary production strain. Also included are scale-up and production protocols. The Microbial Production System has been widely licensed in the biopharmaceutical industry for the production of recombinant proteins.
