XOMA pioneered early methods for the bacterial secretion of antibody domains and has built a body of intellectual property around this work. The production of antibodies, antibody fragments, and other proteins in bacteria using a secretion pathway and the practice of antibody phage display both employ XOMA's microbial secretion of antibodies and antibody fragment technology. For manufacturing applications, XOMA's microbial expression system provides efficient, high-level expression of recombinant proteins in E. coli. Components include an expression vector containing the araB promoter, a companion plasmid containing the pelB secretion sequence, and a proprietary production strain. XOMA has widely licensed its microbial expression technology in the biopharmaceutical industry for the production of recombinant proteins and antibody phage display applications.
