Job Title: Scientist I, E0833-A

Description:
Hands-on Scientist for the Antibody Discovery & Engineering group within the Preclinical Research Division. This group has primary responsibility for the Antibody Discovery Engine by designing and implementing panning and screening strategies to discover, express, characterize and select therapeutic phage antibodies against inflammation and oncology targets, and construction of antibody phage display libraries utilizing a diverse set of source material.

The incumbent main responsibility will be designing, optimizing and implementing methods for antibody library construction.   This include, but is not limited to, design and optimization of display vectors, identification and characterization of source material, design and optimization of protocols for the construction of various antibody formats, construction and phage rescue of large libraries.  Responsibilities also include the design and execution of target-specific selection strategies of such phage display libraries.

The candidate will actively participate to project team meetings, both internal and with collaborators, provide program plan, timeline and budget and communicate regular updates.

Responsibilities might also include serving as a Project Champion, bringing previous protein therapeutic development experience to bear at XOMA.  Candidate must exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, and possess the ability to perform effectively in a team-oriented and cross-functional team environment

Candidate must exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, and possess the ability to perform effectively in a team-oriented and cross-functional team environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Function effectively as part of a team.
  • Design and evaluate novel vector constructs.
  • Design and implement methodology to construct large antibody libraries.
  • Design panning and screening strategies, develop and perform assays that will enable the characterization and selection of desirable phage-derived antibodies against various targets.
  • Perform small-scale Ab production, purification, and biochemical characterization.
  • Make detailed observations, compile and summarize data, prepare analyses, reports, participate in the interpretations of results, and present conclusions at group and departmental meetings.
  • Train and manage the research efforts of junior staff.
  • Document procedures and inventions in laboratory notebooks, prepare reports, and support the filing of patent applications.

Job Requirements:
Education and/or experience:

  • Position requires a PhD or equivalent degree with a minimum of 3-6 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiencies in antibody engineering and library construction; strong molecular biology and antibody phage display experience are required.
  • Management experience of direct reports is desired.
  • Experience with basic bioinformatics tools, particularly DNA sequence analysis.
  • Strong computer skills, which include the use of programs (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, GraphPad Prism, etc.) for data analysis and presentation
