Department: Preclinical Research & Development

Job Title: Senior Scientist I, E0832-R

Description:
Hands-on manager for the Cell Assay Screening Core Lab supporting the Preclinical Research and Development Department.  The core lab supports therapeutic antibody discovery projects by developing, qualifying, and performing cell-based screening assays to characterize selected phage antibodies against inflammation and oncology targets.  Technologies in the core lab currently include automated flow cytometers, cell sorter, homogeneous screening platform and epi-fluorescence microscopy.  Additional instrumentation and automation currently being evaluated for purchase in 200

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Design relevant screening strategies utilizing technologies within the flow core lab; develop and perform assays that will enable the characterization and selection of desirable phage-derived antibodies against inflammation and oncology targets.
  • Identify, evaluate, select and implement new instrumentation, technologies, and processes to enhance FACS-based and imaging-based assays.
  • Provide scientific and technical expertise in the area of flow cytometry and cell-based assay technology to the Preclinical Research and Development Department.
  • The timely and thorough documentation of procedures and inventions in laboratory notebooks and preparation of report

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Contribute to scientific journal publications; attend and present at scientific conferences and workshops.
  • Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature and techniques related to flow cytometry and high throughput cell-based assays.
  • May serve as Project Champion in the development of antibodies for internal and/or collaboration targets.
  • Comply with XOMA's Policies and Procedures.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

  • Supervise 1 research associate according to XOMA's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees, appraising performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

 

Job Requirements:
Education and/or experience:

  • B.A/B.S. or M.A./M.S. degree in cell biology or related discipline with at least 15 years of relevant industrial and management experience
  • Ph.D. degree in cell biology or related discipline with at least 8 years of relevant industrial and management experience
  • Extensive knowledge of flow cytometry and cell-based screening instrumentation

Special skills/knowledge:

  • Ability to use basic computer programs, Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint, graphing software, and image analysis software.

Language skills:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
