Department: EH&S Job Title: Sr. Manager, Environmental Health & Safety, E0829-R Description: Responsible for XOMA's Environmental Health and Safety programs. Maintains compliance with all Federal, State, and Local regulations and coordinates any inspections from outside agencies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: - Maintain necessary documentation for all EH&S required/related permits and licenses.
- Evaluate facilities operations to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local Requirements.
- Conduct routine facility audits to ensure compliance.
- Establish and maintain a program for tracking and displaying EH&S metrics.
- Ensure compliance with all EH&S regulations through improved visibility and programs.
- Develop and implement required employee EH&S training programs
- Maintain radioactive user license (currently on inactive status)
- Maintain Hepatitis B vaccination scheduling and records.
- Responsible for contracts associated with all EH&S requirements.
- Review manifest and other documentation associated with off-site medical waste, bio-hazardous, and hazardous waste disposal. Serve as the primary vendor contact.
- Maintenance of all required EH&S related files.
- Development, maintenance, and implementation of policies and procedures as related to EH&S requirements
- Responsible for all EH&S related regulatory agencies and insurance inspections.
- Maintain the EH&S Department regulatory reference material library, to include MSDS program.
- Understand the provision of the Uniform Fire Code and NIH guidelines for bi-safety and research involving recombinant DNA molecules.
- Coordinate worker's compensation claims.
- Coordinate safety shoe, safety eyeglass, and PPE programs.
- Coordinate preparation, review, and implementation of general safety procedures.
- Manage the EH&S staff to meet department goals.
- Prepare EH&S Department budget.
- Maintenance of XOMA pest control program
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: - Other projects as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with XOMA's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Job Requirements: Education and/or experience Bachelor's degree (Preference in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or Chemistry) from four-year college or university; Minimum 10 years relevant experience, to include supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be driven, self motivated, and able to instill ownership of EH&S compliance in XOMA employees. Special skills/knowledge - Background in radiation, chemical, and biological safety as they pertain to the pharmaceutical/bio-tech industries.
- Full understanding of OSHA and California Environmental Health and Safety Regulations.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Effective communication skills: Verbal and written
Language skills - Ability to read, analyze, and, interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, technical documents, and/or documentation procedures.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from skilled technical and/or scientific personnel.
- Must also be capable of effectively communicating with all levels of management.
Mathematical skills - Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning ability - Ability to defineproblems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Physical demands While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, and hazardous or bio-hazardous waste.
