Department: Preclinical Research & Development

Job Title: Senior Research Associate I, Translational Medicine, E0817-A

Description:
This individual will support the translational medicine efforts in the department by conducting experiments to aid in vitro and in vivo efforts in preclinical research and development.  The position requires an individual with a strong multi-functional background and excellent technical skills.  The person will be required to maintain multiple projects and perform experiments in vitro with agents and therapeutics in cell-based, tissue-based, biochemical, and molecular assays.  A background in assay development or histology/fluorescence microscopy is a plus.  Standard techniques include but are not limited to cell transformation/transfection, DNA/RNA manipulation, PCR, SDS-PAGE, immunoprecipitation, western blot, cell proliferation and apoptosis assays, confocal or fluorescence and brightfield microscopy, and ELISA.  Experience with immunohistochemistry and work with mice are an asset.  The individual will analyze data from experiments and studies, and interpret and present such data.  He or she should be able communicate the results of their experiments effectively to their group, the department, and to multi-functional project teams.  Industry or academic experience in oncology, translational medicine, and/or the evaluation of anti-cancer agents (small molecules or antibodies) is needed.  Good communication skills are required as well as the ability to work in a matrixed-team environment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Established as an expert in a subfield with a strong scientific track record and a history of accomplishment as evidenced by success in the lab and by a track record of innovation
  • Establish and be a driver for innovation in their field of expertise to create and establish novel protocols and assays. Comprehend and follow laboratory protocols, methods, and procedures within related cross-disciplinary functions. Understand and help develop strategies and techniques to address biological questions in molecular biology, cell biology, histology, and biochemistry.
  • Make detailed observations, compile, analyze, and interpret data, and present conclusions. Able to work on complex problems and bring scientific expertise to bear in finding creative solutions. Able to work independently and write research reports and papers with a thorough analysis of the data, keep organized and accurate records. Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Set up, adjust, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Perform all experiments with best laboratory practices and follow all XOMA policies and safety regulations
  • Train and mentor more junior RAs

Job Requirements:
Education and/or experience:

  • BS/BA with 8+ years or MA/MS with 6+ years experience in cell biology, biochemistry, histology, microscopy, or another relevant field.
  • Excellent tissue culture and lab techniques and hands on experience with cellular transformation/transfection, PCR, SDS-PAGE, immunoprecipitation, western blot, cell proliferation and apoptosis assays, microscopy and ELISA. Ability to analyze data using standard statistical methods in biology.
  • Ability to use more complex image analysis software as well as basic computer programs (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Prism, SigmaStat, etc...)
  • Strong and effective oral and written communication skills.
