Summary:
This individual will support the Pharmacology efforts in the department by conducting experiments  to aid in vivo and in vitro efforts  in preclinical research and development.  The position requires hands-on experience and skills in the development of in vivo models of oncology and inflammation.  Specific responsibilities will include cellular pharmacology work involving mammalian cell culture, implementation of in vivo efficacy studies of antibody-based therapeutics and in vitro assays in support of efficacy studies.  Experience in ADCC or CDC assays is a plus.  The individual should be able to work independently to analyze, interpret, compile, and summarize data and present conclusions.  The individual should be able to communicate the results of their experiments effectively to their group, the department, and to multi-functional project teams.  Industry or academic experience in tumor biology, translational medicine, and/or the evaluation of anti-cancer agents (small molecules or antibodies) is required.  Good communication skills are required as well as the ability to work in a matrixed-team environment. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, comprehend and follow laboratory protocols, methods, and procedures within related cross-disciplinary functions.  Perform routine laboratory procedures including the tumor implantation and immunization in mice and rats, monitoring animals on study, dosing animal studies (intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, intravenous, intradermal) and other assays as needed
  • Perform in vivo and in vitro experiments with best laboratory practices according to defined protocols that contribute to current project strategies
  • Make detailed observations and analyze, interpret, compile, summarize data and present conclusions.  Able to work independently and write research reports.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate laboratory equipment and instruments in a multi-disciplinary setting.  Perform all experiments with best laboratory practices and follow all XOMA policies and safety regulations.  Train and mentor more junior RAs

Requirements:

  • BS/BA or MA/MS with 6+ years experience in cellular pharmacology and cell biology or another relevant field
  • Hands-on experience with in vivo techniques (animal handling, dosing by various routes, blood collection, necropsy and anesthesia in mice and rats).
  • Mammalian cell culture and experience with in vitro assays (ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, Proliferation assays). 
  • Familiarity with standard statistical methods in biology
  • Ability to use basic computer programs (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, SigmaStat, Graphpad Prism)
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
