Technology

XOMA pioneered early methods for the bacterial secretion of antibody domains.  Building on this core intellectual property position, we have evolved an intellectual property estate that is indispensable to a substantial segment of the discovery and manufacturing of antibodies and other protein products.

The production of antibodies, antibody fragments, and other proteins in bacteria using a secretion pathway and the practice of antibody phage display both employ XOMA's microbial secretion of antibodies and antibody fragment technology. To date, we have licensed this technology to more than 50 companies.

Two products are on the market that are manufactured using our technology:  Genentech Inc.'s LUCENTIS® (ranibizumab) antibody fragment to vascular endothelial growth factor for wet age-related macular degeneration and UCB Celltech's CIMZIA® (certolizumab pegol) anti-TNF alpha antibody fragment for Crohn's disease.
